Elite athlete Kiplimo Kimutai beats Redcar Half Marathon record
Sunday’s rain did little to dampen the spirit of 1700 entrants who took part in this year’s Start Fitness Redcar Half Marathon.
Organisers of the 28th Tees Valley Leisure Redcar Half Marathon have said it was the best year ever with 1700 entrants and nearly 1400 runners crossing the finishing line.
This year’s event was also a record breaker with elite athlete, Kenyan, Kiplimo Kimutai, being the fastest to cross the finishing line in the event’s 28 year history at 62:07.
Runners travelled from all over the UK to take part in Redcar’s premier sporting event which was organised by Tees Valley Leisure in partnership with Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council. Other world class athletes from Kenya and Ethiopia also flew in for the race and despite the rain; thousands of spectators lined the new half marathon route which started at The Stray in Redcar, to cheer on the runners.
The winner of the women’s race was Jennie Blizard who finished the course in 1:18.
Cash prizes totalling £6000 were presented to the winners by Great Britain’s leading race walker and local sports celebrity, Joanne Jackson, and Great Britain’s middle distance star and New Marske Harrier, Ricky Stevenson.
Redcar and Cleveland’s newly elected Mayor, Councillor Ray Goddard congratulated the winners and said:
“This has been a fantastic event - the new route has been a great success and we hope to make the event even bigger and better next year. Today’s event attracted entrants of all ages, some of whom donned fancy dress outfits which certainly brightened up a rainy day.
Dame Tanni-Grey Thompson was there to support the runners and the winning male in the wheelchair race was Simon Lawson time who completed the course in 55 minutes. Winner in the ladies wheelchair race was Nikki Emerson who crossed the finishing line in 1:04.
Event organiser and managing director of Tees Valley Leisure Paddy Corcoran said:
“The Redcar Half Marathon has established itself as one of the UK’s premier sporting events and is a fantastic showcase for Redcar and Cleveland.
“This year, we tried a new route starting from the Stray in Redcar, which with its scenic seafront position, not only provided the perfect setting for the race, but has attracted thousands of people into the heart of Redcar which is a great boost to the local economy helping to boost trade for shops, hotels, pubs and restaurants. Also there was less traffic congestion than previous years which is another benefit of the new Redcar Half Marathon route.
“The new route is a very fast course as shown by the winner’s time and has huge potential to attract even more of the world’s fastest athletes next year – with the possibility of becoming the fastest half marathon course in the country” explained Paddy.
“The event grows in popularity year on year and is well staged which is recognised by elite athletes from across the world. We were delighted that elite athlete Kiplimo Kimutai flew in from Kenya to participate in this year’s event and has beaten all previous Redcar Half Marathon records - completing the course in just 62:07.
“The event has also been a big hit with club runners who aim for their personal bests, and also for the many fun runners who have raised thousands of pounds for charity.
“This year’s Family Fun Run, sponsored by NHS Redcar & Cleveland, which started just after the main event, has been a great success. Congratulations to winner Ben Hetherington, 14 from Sedgefield for being the first boy to cross the finishing line and to Abigail Hearmon, 14 from Sedgefield, for being the fastest runner in the girls category.
The atmosphere at The Stray was terrific and despite the rain, spectators came out in their droves to line the 13.1 mile new seaside route and to encourage the Family Fun runners.
Paddy added: “It has been a fantastic day and I would like to thank all those who have worked hard to ensure the race was a success including the members of the local running and netball clubs, Cleveland Police, St John Ambulance, our own staff at Tees Valley Leisure and staff of Tees Valley Sport and all those runners who have raised so much money for worthy causes.
“I would also like to thank our main Sponsor Start Fitness and other event sponsors including Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, Hatton Traffic, NHS Redcar and Cleveland and TFM and Magic Radio who have all helped to make this a very memorable day.
Firefighter Paul’s 999 half marathon mission
Firefighters need to be quick off the mark – and Redcar fireman Paul Lowes will be proving he’s hot stuff when he takes part in the 13.1km Redcar Half Marathon in June.
For Paul – very appropriately – will be running as competitor 999 in the race, and is expected to finish in the top ten.
He said: “I haven’t done the Redcar Half Marathon since 2003, when I came second, so I’m really looking forward to it.”
Paul, from Guisborough, was encouraged to enter the 13 June race by a friend, but needs no special training because he keeps up his fitness all year round thanks to his job and to his other sporting activities.
“As well as running, I normally enter duathlons, which consist of a 15km run, a 40km bike ride then a further 5km run, so I stay pretty fit,” he said. “I’ve been selected to take part in the World Championships in Scotland in September in my age group, which is 40.”
Paul runs for North York Moors Athletic club, and is supported by Bike Traks of Great Ayton's Cleveland Runners shop. He hopes to complete the Half Marathon in around 70 minutes.
“I like the Redcar Half Marathon because it’s local, it’s really scenic, well-organised and it’s well-supported – and because the route this year goes past my fire station twice!” he said.
This year’s Half Marathon, which has attracted a new sponsor Start Fitness, a North East based sports clothing and footwear retailer, is predicted to attract even more runners than the 1600 who took part last year, as it will take place in the milder weather in June instead of mid April as in previous years. Prize money totalling £6270 will be up for grabs to attract elite runners to the event.
The race which is organised by Tees Valley Leisure in partnership with Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, will once again be backed by Britain’s best known Paralympic star and gold medalist, Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson. It will be supported by the Local Enterprise Growth Initiative (LEGI) with sponsorship from TFM Radio and Magic 1170 and Hatton Traffic.
Race organiser Paddy Corcoran, Managing Director of Tees Valley Leisure, said: “We’re certainly attracting some high-calibre entrants to the Half Marathon again this year, and we’re delighted to have such a top-notch local contender as Paul taking part. We wish him good luck – perhaps he can beat his last position!”
Entry forms for the Redcar Half Marathon are now available online from the Tees Valley Leisure website at www.runteesvalley.co.uk

Meet the marathon man who used to struggle to walk downstairs....
Mark Leach used to run eight miles every other night – but then he was struck down by an illness so that he struggled to walk downstairs.
But now Mark, from Nunthorpe, Middlesbrough, is fighting fit again – and this year he’s taken on a gruelling running challenge to raise money for a cause that is close to his heart.
Mark will be tackling the 13-mile Start Fitness Redcar Half Marathon on 13 June as part of a four-race marathon effort that he hopes will help him net £5,000 for research into prostate cancer. But it wasn’t cancer that caused his own fall from fitness last time he did some serious running.
“My brother Tony and I managed to complete the London marathon in 2003, raising £3,000 for cancer charities,” he said. “But in November that year I was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or ME, following a bout of flu.
“This meant I went from running eight miles every other night, to not being able to walk down the stairs. I felt like my life was over – and if it wasn’t for my wife Vicky, who had to physically dress me and give me the will to go on, and the thought of my kids and their kids, I think I may have crumbled.”
Mark didn’t crumble, and has gradually recovered 90 per cent of his fitness. But seeing his father-in-law and his close friend struggle with prostate cancer has inspired him to get back to his fundraising ways.
“My friend John Stanton has thankfully recovered from cancer after a number of treatments, and my father-in-law Malcolm Lindridge from Seaton Carew, Hartlepool, is also doing well,” he said.
“Seeing them go through so many emotions on being diagnosed, I decided I would do some running to help fund research into the disease.”
Mark, 45 years old and a director of Lowe and Simpson in Stockton, will be tackling the 26-mile Edinburgh Marathon on 23 May, and the 13-mile Start Fitness Redcar Half Marathon in June, followed by the Great North Run on 19 September and the Dublin Marathon on 25 October.
He has set up a fundraising website at www.justgiving.com/mark-leach4runs, and he also has a Let’s raise money for Research into prostate cancer Facebook site that he is urging people to join.
He said: “I’ve got £975 pledged already, but I’d like everyone to help me hit the £5,000 target – just think, you may be the friend or family of someone who is carrying this disease without knowing.”
Paddy Corcoran, Head of Tees Valley Leisure which runs the leisure centres in Redcar and Cleveland and organiser of the Redcar Half Marathon said:
“Mark’s story is an inspiration to everyone. So many people who take part in our half-marathon are doing it for heart-warming reasons. I’d like to wish Mark the best of luck with his training and in the race, and I hope lots of people come forward to sponsor him in his bid to support such a worthwhile cause.”
Mark is also hoping local people will give him their support while he’s training. He said...
“If you’re driving along Acklam, Marton and Ormesby Roads and you see me running, please give me a honk of encouragement!” he said.
The 2010 Start Fitness Redcar Half Marathon is supported by Redcar & Cleveland Council and the Local Enterprise Growth Initiative (LEGI) with sponsorship from TFM Radio and Magic 1170 and Hatton Traffic.

This year’s Half Marathon, which has attracted a new sponsor Start Fitness, a North East based sports clothing and footwear retailer, will break with tradition and will take place on Sunday 13 June instead of mid April as in previous years. The 2010 Start Fitness Redcar Half Marathon will be launched at Redcar's most popular attraction - the Coatham Boating Lake which will form part of the scenic 13.1 mile route.

Fun Run’s a family affair for young cancer patient Kieran
For young cancer patient Kieran Garbutt, Sunday 19 April will be a special day.
For eight-year-old Kieran, who is battling bone cancer, will be enjoying the fresh air with his family as they all take part in the Redcar Family Fun Run which is organised by Tees Valley Leisure.
Kieran, from Norton, was inspired to do his bit in the run by his school caretaker Jon Adams, who is taking part in the Redcar Half Marathon on the same day to raise money for Kieran’s favourite charity, Charlie Bear Cancer Care.
Kieran’s mum Diane said: “My nieces, Sophie and Rebecca Wake, who are 11 and 16, wanted to take part in the half marathon but were too young, so they decided the Family Fun Run was ideal for them.
“Then I decided I would join in, too, and Kieran’s sister Holly, who is six, is going to come too.”
Kieran is keen to join his family and do as much of the 3km run – which starts at Kirkleatham Showfield – as he can.
Diane said: “Kieran is undergoing radiotherapy and chemotherapy at the moment, and he was scheduled to have chemo the week of the run. But that would have stopped him taking part, so he is having the therapy early.
“He’s doing very well, although he is having some problems with his legs at the moment, and he’ll be doing as much of the run as he can. It’s a great day out for him, because it’s not just the race but also the chance to meet lots of people.”
Sophie and Rebecca now have the running bug, and are planning to do the Race for Life later in the year to raise cash for Charlie Bear.
The Redcar Family Fun Run and the Redcar Half Marathon are being organised by Tees Valley Leisure, and organiser Paddy Corcoran wished the Garbutt family good luck in the run.
“The Family Fun Run is an ideal event for people of all abilities to take part in, because it’s only 3km and takes in a lovely route that everyone can enjoy.
“I hope Kieran and his family thoroughly enjoy their day out. There will be lots of entertainment for children on the day, with clowns, balloon modelling, street theatre and a disco. TFM Radio and Magic 1170 will be providing the music on the day and it will be a terrific atmosphere” said Paddy.
Anyone interested in taking part in the 13.1 mile Redcar Half Marathon on April 19 or the popular 3km Family Fun Run which takes place in the grounds of Kirkleatham Showfield the same day, should call Tees Valley Leisure on 01642 452488 or download the entry form from the Tees Valley leisure website www.teesvalleyleisure.co.uk. All entrants will receive an exclusive T-shirt and free goody bag.

RAF team runs for heroes wounded in action
Heroes wounded in action are set to benefit from the massive footpower of a fit team from RAF Boulmer.
For no fewer than 24 men and women from the Northumberland base are planning to tackle the Tees Valley Leisure Redcar Half Marathon on Sunday April 19.
The team has been put together by Corporal Ken Johnson, who said: “We’ve got 18 men and six women running, aged from 21 to 52 – they are a mixture of RAF personnel and civilians, and include two doctors, a physiotherapist and a nurse.
“We wanted to do something to show our support for the charity Help for Heroes, which gives practical, direct help to people wounded in Britain’s conflicts around the world.
“Because we’re based in the North East, the Redcar Half Marathon seemed an idea way to do some fundraising. We’re hoping to raise about £2,500 from the run.”
The team members will all be running at their own pace, but the quickest hopes to finish the event in around 1hr 40 mins.
“I didn’t have to persuade anyone to take part – they were all keen to do their bit,” said Corporal Johnson.
Redcar Half Marathon’s organiser, head of Tees Valley Leisure Paddy Corcoran, said he was delighted that so many people from RAF Boulmer were getting involved in the race.
“It’s great to see such a big team getting together – the Redcar Half Marathon is an event for the whole North East community, and we’re delighted to have this support from RAF Boulmer,” he said.
“They’ve picked a really worthy cause for their fundraising, and we wish them well in the event.”
The Tees Valley Leisure Redcar Half Marathon is supported by the Local Enterprise Growth Initiative (LEGI) in partnership with Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council. Other sponsors are Mizuno, TFM Radio and Hatton Traffic. The Family Fun Run is sponsored by Redcar and Cleveland PCT.

999? That’s my number, says police runner Deborah
When Deborah Fenny dons the number 999 to run in the Redcar Half Marathon in April, it’s going to feel very familiar...
For Deborah, from Stockton, works for Cleveland Police as a response officer – and that means she’s the first face callers meet when they dial 999 to report an incident.
“When people ring in to tell us about an incident such as a burglary, I go out to them to make the first police visit,” she said. “So it’s very appropriate that I’m going to be running as number 999!”
The Redcar Half Marathon which takes place on April 19 is organised by Tees Valley Leisure in partnership with Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council. It is supported by the local Enterprise Growth Initiative (LEGI). It is hoped over 1500 runners will take part.
For Deborah, it’s her second time in the race.
“I completed it last year, and this year I’m also planning to do the Great North Run in September,” she said.
“Having a goal like the Redcar Half Marathon really helps you to focus on improving your fitness levels. I’m doing work in the gym and also running in preparation, and I’m hoping to do the run in a time between 1 hr 35 mins and 1hr 40 mins this time.”
Deborah’s half marathon will also help raise money to build a hydrotherapy pool at Kilton Thorpe School, which teaches 125 students with a wide range of learning difficulties and complex needs.
She said: “I heard that one of the other runners in the race – Karen Keen from Guisborough – is doing the run to raise money for the pool in memory of her daughter Lauren, who was a pupil at the school and who sadly died suddenly.
“I thought it was an excellent cause to run for. The pool will help children who need physiotherapy, but it will also be a great sensory experience for others, and provide a lot of fun for the children too.”
Redcar Half Marathon’s organiser, head of Tees Valley Leisure Paddy Corcoran, said he was delighted to hear about Deborah’s fundraising and wished her well in the race.
“Redcar Half Marathon not only gives people the chance to improve their fitness, but also provides a real boost to the community thanks to people like Deborah raising funds,” he said.
“Deborah’s police job proves she’s great at quick responses, and as runner 999 we hope she’ll be able to show off a real turn of speed!”
Half Marathon sponsors are Mizuno, TFM Radio and Hatton Traffic and the Family Fun Run is sponsored by Redcar and Cleveland PCT.

Tony’s challenge to head Martin: get your running shoes on!
Keen runner Tony Smart will be getting his own back on his children’s head teacher tomorrow (Friday) by issuing a special challenge – and he’s hoping it will get kids and parents on the move too...
Tony – leisure facilities officer at Saltburn Leisure Centre – has three children at John Emmerson Batty Primary School in Redcar.
Last year, head teacher Martin Kitching challenged him to enter the school’s parents’ race – and although fit Tony was first over the finishing line, he’s keen to see Martin being put through his paces too.
“I’m the special guest at the school assembly tomorrow, and I’m going to get my own back by challenging Martin to take part in the Redcar Family Fun Run on Sunday 19 April,” he said.
“What’s more, I’m hoping to get the children at the school involved in the run too – and with a bit of luck, they’ll bring their parents along as well.”
Up to 1000 mums, dads and children will be stretching their legs in the 3km Family Fun Run while upto 2000 others take part in the 27th Redcar Half Marathon. It’s organised by Tees Valley Leisure in partnership with Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council.
The Fun Run is on a safe, off-road course and will start at the famous Toasting Gate at the picturesque Kirkleatham showground. All entrants will receive a goody bag containing an exclusive Family Fun Run t-shirt, commemorative certificate, badge and other goodies including Tees Valley Leisure vouchers with money off offers to the value of £20.
There will also be lots of entertainment for children on the day, with clowns, balloon modelling, street theatre and a disco. TFM Radio and Magic 1170 will be providing music.
Tony plans to hold some special coaching sessions during the John E Batty School children’s PE lessons to help encourage them to take part and to get them motivated.
“I normally do the half marathon, but my six-year-old son Matthew has persuaded me to run with him this year in the family race,” he said.
“I’m really looking forward to it, and I’m hoping lots of the schoolchildren and their parents take part too – you don’t have to be fit to join in, but it’s a lot of fun and a great stepping stone to get you started on the road to fitness.”
Peter Price, Director of Public Health at Redcar and Cleveland Primary Care Trust, sponsors of the Family Fun Run commented:
“We are delighted to be sponsoring this superb community event. Not only does it kick start a healthier lifestyle, but it also helps people of all ages get fit in a very safe environment in the lovely surroundings of Kirkleatham Village and Showground.
“In partnership with Tees Valley Leisure and Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, we are planning to work closely with local primary schools to encourage participation in the event to promote healthy living and the fun of keeping fit” said Peter.”
To encourage the children from John E Batty even further, Tees Valley Leisure is giving away one free place to one child in each class (age seven to eleven) to enter the run.
Paddy Corcoran of Tees Valley Leisure said they were delighted that the school is getting so involved and urged other schools to enter and join in the fun.
“We hope the family run will attract 1000 adults and children,” he said. “Families will really enjoy the atmosphere on the day and the thrill of crossing the finishing line. It’s going to be a fun-packed day, and a winner for everyone.”

Mum signs up for marathon in memory of her daughter Lauren
A mum from Guisborough will compete in this year's Tees Valley Leisure Redcar Half Marathon on 19th April to raise money for a cause that is close to her heart.
Karen Keen, aged 45, from Guisborough, will be running in memory of her daughter Lauren who died suddenly in October 2007, to raise money for Kilton Thorpe School.
Kilton Thorpe is a specialist school which caters for around 125 pupils and students with a wide range of learning difficulties and complex needs.
Karen who works for Middlesbrough and Redcar & Cleveland Community Services in Guisborough said:
“I am taking part in my first ever half marathon to raise money for the refurbishment of the hydrotherapy pool at Kilton Thorpe School in Brotton.
“My daughter Lauren who died suddenly of SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy) when she was aged ten, was a pupil at Kilton Thorpe and she absolutely loved school life and all that it had to offer. The staff are so dedicated and truly devoted to the children in their care.
“Lauren loved swimming – she swam with the use of armbands and got so much pleasure from the hydrotherapy pool. The pool is so beneficial for children like Lauren who have special needs – it not only helps children, who need specific physiotherapy treatment, but it is also a stimulating sensory medium, and perhaps most of all, it is fantastic fun.
“However, the pool is now in need of refurbishment. The school has obtained quotes for £20 000 to undertake the much needed work, which is why I decided to enter the Redcar Half Marathon to help the school reach their fundraising target.
“I’ve never entered a long distance running event before so the Redcar Half Marathon will be quite a challenge. But knowing I can help raise money for this really worthy project has given me the incentive to train hard.
“I need to build up my fitness levels and follow a training programme and I have joined two athletics clubs – North Yorks Athletic Club and Marske Harriers.
My son Gareth, aged 14, attends Laurence Jackson School in Guisborough and he will be taking part in the Fun Run. I go to the track at the school on Thursday evenings to train with Marske Harriers and help improve my fitness and stamina. Running is becoming quite addictive and I feel much fitter and healthier”
Paddy Corcoran, Head of Tees Valley Leisure and event organiser said: We are urging people to enter the Half Marathon to not only improve their health and fitness but to help raise money for good causes. The hydrotherapy pool at Kilton Thorpe School is such an important resource for children with special needs and I wish Karen well in her fundraising efforts.

Follow Jon's lead and run for a good cause!
A caretaker at Norton Primary School has decided to pull on his running shoes to raise money for a cancer charity.
Jon Adams, aged 51, who has worked as caretaker for twenty years at Norton Primary School, has won a free entry into the Redcar Half Marathon, organised by Tees Valley Leisure, for sharing his story about why he decided to run.
He decided to compete in the region’s premier sporting event on behalf of one of the schools pupils Kieran Garbutt.
Kieran, aged 8years from Norton has been battling bone cancer and his family are keen for Jon to help him raise money for his favourite charity, Charlie Bear Cancer Care.
Jon was delighted to help and is training hard at his local gym to build up his fitness and get in good shape for the event which takes place on Sunday April 19th.
Jon said: “Kieran has just returned to school after gruelling treatment. When I see him it brings it home how tough it must be for him and his family”.
“Many children like Kieran are having to face so many challenges early on in their lives and the children’s cancer charities are so important in providing sick children and their families with the support they need through these difficult times”
“I wanted to set myself a challenge to do something worthwhile to help raise funds for this worthy cause
Head teacher Susan Dawson is delighted that her caretaker is taking up the challenge – she said:
“As a school we are all incredibly proud of the courage Kieran has demonstrated since he began his treatment last year.
“ With his family supporting him he has kept on smiling throughout and has been an inspiration to us all, including Jon Adams, our school caretaker who has taken up this challenge in support of this extremely worthwhile charity. Now, we are very proud of both of them!
Paddy Corcoran, Head of Tees Valley Leisure, the event organiser said: “We are urging people to follow Jon’s lead and enter the Redcar Half Marathon to get fit and healthy and help raise badly needed funds for good causes.
“We are hoping to beat all previous records and recruit even more people to run this year. Our target is to recruit 2000 runners and raise even more money to boost funds for local charities.
Anyone interested in taking part in the 13.1 mile Redcar Half Marathon on April 19 or the popular 3 kilometre Family Fun Run which takes place in the grounds of Kirkleatham Showfield the same day, should call Tees Valley Leisure on 01642 452488 or download the entry form from the Tees Valley leisure website www.teesvalleyleisure.co.uk. Follow Peter’s lead and enter the Redcar Half Marathon
At 74, Peter Braney has taken part in Redcar Half Marathon for more than a quarter of a century and he has never missed a single one!
As the first official entrant to the 2009 Redcar Half Marathon, Peter, from Manor Place, Stockton, and a longstanding member of Billingham Marsh House Harriers, Peter will be donning his running shoes on Sunday 19th April for the 27th time.
Peter is a veteran of more than 145 half-marathons in total, and expects to finish the course in around two hours. He firmly believes in running as a great way to keep fit and healthy and he is urging others to enter the event and follow his lead.
“The Redcar Half Marathon is my favourite event as it is on my doorstep, is the right distance and is a fast, flat, all tarmac course. It is a really scenic route, taking in Redcar’s breathtaking seafront and the picturesque Kirkleatham Village.
“I am passionate about running but the funny thing is that I only started when I was 35 because I bought my son some running shoes and they didn’t fit him so I tried them instead – I have been running ever since.
“This is a great chance for people of all ages and fitness levels to take part and walk or run their way to fitness. Anyone can take part and you don’t have to run the 13.1 mile course – many people prefer to walk the course and this can be still be done in about three hours.
“But it is important to start training early so you are well prepared - running or walking is the cheapest form of exercise there is” added Peter.
To celebrate the season of goodwill, event organisers, Tees Valley Leisure are set to give away 20 free festive half marathon places (saving around £20.00 per entry) and goodie bags, exclusive t-shirts and leisure centre vouchers to the best early bird entries.
